Rustler Produce Limited, and its dedicated grower group, is committed to producing onions in an economically viable and environmentally sustainable manner. We achieve this by the use of integrated crop management systems, cultural control techniques and advanced crop monitoring techniques to reduce the use of synthetic chemical pesticides.
This care and attention begins with site selection. Onions require a fertile, easily worked soil of good nutrient status and pH. The Cambridgeshire Fens, which provide the majority of sites - together with Suffolk - for our produce, are highly suitable for quality bulb onion production. Varieties are selected on the basis of quality and agronomic characteristics, such as maturity date, storage ability and bulb shape.
Rustler's expert growers produce over 2000 acres of onions and 750 acres of leeks. All of our growers are Farm Assured and some are members of LEAF and the FWAG Biodiversity Scheme. We have some of the most advanced storage complexes in the United Kingdom.
The pest and disease control measures that we employ are fully compatible with ICM principles. Cultural and biological controls are used where possible and all pesticide applications are justified by measurable criteria.
Timing of harvest is critical to maximize ultimate bulb quality, while the use of state-of-the-art harvesting equipment ensures that our onions are handled in the most gentle manner.
