Our Focus on the Environment

Energy

Produce World aims to be a low carbon company and to sustain this Group policy.

We are committed to responsible energy management and efficiency throughout all our sites, utilizing buildings, plant and equipment in the most cost-effective manner to achieve this goal.

We have a commitment to reducing energy usage through staff awareness training; by using metering to determine major usage areas; and by using Key Performance Indicators for kWh usage and calculation of CO2 emissions.

New equipment is always evaluated for energy consumption to ensure best practice is followed.

We are measuring and understanding the effect of our actions, and are working with our suppliers and customers to reduce our carbon foot-print.

Waste

Produce World aims to reduce, reuse or recycle with a target of zero to land fill by 2012.

Separation of site waste streams allows for the recycling of paper, cardboard, polythene, wood and shrink-wrap. A previous cost can soon become an income stream with careful planning and commitment.

Hazardous waste such as light tubes or bulbs, waste oils and batteries are kept separated for specialist recycling.

Water

Monitoring of water usage and utilization of used water is practised on the sites, together with the use of lagoons and reed beds for the treatment of used water. Machinery using fresh potable water is fitted with auto control valves to ensure no wastage when production lines are not operating.

Wildlife

The Group are working with customers and suppliers to encourage wildlife habitats by planting wild flowers and plants for bumble-bees, and helping reintroduce otters at special farm sites. We are supporters of Operation Bumblebee not only on our farms, but also at our pack houses.

Nuisance

Produce World works closely with the local communities to ensure machinery and vehicle noise, dust, odours and fumes do not affect the environment and cause unnecessary problems for others.

Looking after the environment will not only improve the quality of life for others but help improve site efficiency and reduce cost at the same time, just by being aware how important the environment is to our wellbeing.
